Feasibility of Conventional Non-Destructive Testing Methods in Detecting Embedded FRP Reinforcements

Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars/strands are the most promising alternative to their steel counterparts for reinforcing concrete elements due resistance corrosion, lighter weight, higher strength and better durability. However, very limited research has been conducted in relation non-destructive testing (NDT) methods that applicable damage detection FRP bars or of reinforcements embedded concrete. The ability assess condition relatively new unique will increase confidence construction industry use as a reliable substitute reinforcements. This paper investigates two commonly used NDT methods, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Phased Array Ultrasonic (PAU), detecting elements. GPR PAU tests were performed on slab specimens reinforced with GFRP (Glass-FRP) bars, bar, variations depth, size configuration, specimen different types available results show devices can detect CFRP (Carbon-FRP) strands some extent, detectability increases antenna center frequency. On contrary, is only capable strands. this also emphasize need further developments related applications bars.
